  patterning  print

Patterning worksheet. Children choose 3 colors for the 1st and do an up ABC patterning, 2 next for the AAB, and their choice of up to 3 colors for the last.
Picture

  Size Sequencing  print

For younger children, just use 3 distinctly different sizes rather than the 6. This is a little more difficult for older kids, because they want to use the words and there is purposefully no MEDIUM.
Picture

  Build a Sundae Game  print

Children roll a die and gain the item they need to complete their sundae. If they roll an item they already posses, then they lose the turn. Roll a 6, and it's free choice of an item they need. Youngest player rolls first. Set for 2 to 6 players. Additional sets can be printed for more participants. Once laminated, cut a slit along the lower sundae cup inside edge so that children can insert items.

  counting file folder game  print

File Folder Game for rote counting. Laminate both sheets and front cover, cover backs with spray adhesive, and attach to the inside of a file folder. Laminate the number cards and store in an envelope inside the folder.

  flannel board activity  print

Flannel Board rhyme.  Laminate, and add Velcro dots for flannel board use, or magnets for fridge use. Velcro dots should be hook side on backs. On front of the white scoops, you will also need to place a loop piece so the colored pieces will stick to the front. Make sure the kids get the chance to figure out what color is made!

5 Ice Cream Cones

Place vanilla cones on flannel board and color words in a corner or side of board. Give each child a colored scoop.  When you get to the color, let the children come up with which one it is. Let that child place the color scoop on top of the vanilla one and find the color word to put above it, then use his/her name to finish the line.

Five ice cream cones at the ice cream shop,
But no one wanted to buy them with vanilla on top.
One little ice cream took some time to think.

He mixed in some bubblegum and turned himself to pink. Little (student) came along,

And took that yummy ice cream home
4…blueberries/blue
3…lemonade/yellow
2…raspberries/red
1…all the colors/rainbow

Reasoning: Where is the vanilla ice cream?

  shadow match print

Shadow matching is an important logic/reasoning and observation activity for preschoolers. While it may seem simple to us, for them it can be difficult.

Skills: fine motor, logic, reasoning, observation, directional placement

  number/sound cards  print

These are a free choice activity. I keep the cards and clothes pins in a bin in the middle of the work table (math or reading center appropriate.) I have them use blue clothes pins for the numbers, green for the beginning sound and red for the ending sound.

Skills: fine motor, method counting, beginning sounds, ending sounds, phonics, letter recognition, logic and reasoning.
Picture

  pre-writing  print

For the littlest kids, I do this with them, guiding their hand. On this type of activity, once completed appropriately, I always ask the children to embellish as they choose.

Skills: pre-writing, fine motor, logic/reasoning, following directions, letter recognition, color words.
Picture

  dot-to-dots print

This is the same image in three formats: 1-30, uppercase A-Z, and lower case a-z. Utilize which one addresses your child's skill practice needs or level of ability. I do these holding even young children's hands, pointing out each letter/number and dot, and helping them to draw a straight line. It helps them to begin to recognize the letter/number and builds fine motor skills. Once they can draw a fairly straight line, then I may still assist with where to go next. For older children, I will provide a letter or number line for them to self-help.
Picture

  bingo/matching/concentration  print/download $1.00

This is a 6 card set for BINGO play. Also included are the image and word call card, and an additional card with just the item names that can be used for advanced readers to match. The last page is a full-size sheet of image cards that can be used for matching, Go Fish, Concentration, flannel board activities, etc.

Skills: observation, fine motor, logic/reasoning, math concepts, patterning, vocabulary

  word search print

This is a very simple word search. Words are across or down. Even children who don't read can do this simply by recognition of pattern, rather than "reading" the word.  Laminate for multi-use, or print out for worksheets.

Skills: left/right and up/down convention, reading, uppercase and lowercase letter recognition, spelling, fine motor left/right and up/down convention, reading, uppercase and lowercase letter recognition, spelling, fine motor
Picture

  lacing print

Print out, laminate, and use spray adhesive to adhere to heavy cardboard or 1/8" masonite and cut out. Punch holes (masonite will need to be drilled), attach laces to one end. If you don't want to purchase laces, thin white cotton shoe laces can be used, or yarn with taped ends.

Skills: fine motor, methodical process,
Picture

 craft pattern print

This craft pattern can be sized and used in various ways such as flannel board pattern, coloring, painting, tracing, etc.
Picture

  craft/puppet pattern  print

Intended to be used to create a paper bag puppet, however the items could be printed out on colored paper or cut out of felt for a flannel board application, or used in a variety of ways.
Picture

 booklet print

My students love these little books. They each have a bin that they store them in and take them out to read during free play and reading time. Because they are simple, repetitive, provide visual clues and we read them many times during the week, they really get the information and are able to easily retain it.

Skills: fine motor, purposeful coloring, staying within the lines, counting, number recognition, letter recognition, reading, number words, shape, sight words, reading conventions, counting conventions, method counting, rote counting
Picture
Picture

  measure  print

Math center open activity for measuring and recording measurements by units. Good logic/reasoning activity as the small and large units are exactly 2/1 in ratio. Interesting to see which children arrive at this conclusion on their own.

Skills: unit measuring, rote counting, number recognition, fine motor, logic, reasoning, visual discrimination
Picture

 What is Hot/Cold?   print

Venn diagram. For younger children, draw pictures. Older children can cut and paste pictures or write in items.
Picture

 Calendar cards print

Standard sized calendar cards to fit most pocket chart calendars. Created for 1-7 patterning. Odds and evens can be printed on different colored paper to reinforce odd/even concept.
Picture

  sentence wall  print

  word wall print

Working on theme vocabulary and concepts. Words provide conventions of silent "e," and double vowels.  The sentences provide a good opportunity to review/introduce punctuation. These are posted and we go over them in the morning together. I point to the card and we all say the word then spell it together. Then we all say the sentences together as I point to each word. Throughout the day I'll throw out questions, such as "Who knows how to spell (word wall word)?" and they'll race to the wall and spell it. Or, I'll ask, "___ does WHAT?" and they'll race to tell me a sentence, usually from memory, and I'll direct them to the sentence wall and have them "read" it, pointing to the words to reinforce. Later in the week I'll up the game to ask, "How do you spell ..." a sentence wall words that they usually have to find/recognize, then spell.

Skills: letter recognition, reading, spelling, phonics, punctuation, grammar, vocabulary

Ice Cream Stop By Shel Silverstein Pg. 51

The circus train made an ice cream stop
At the fifty-two flavor ice cream stand.
The animals all got off the train
And walked right up to the ice cream man.
“I’ll take Vanilla,” yelled the gorilla.
“I’ll take Chocolate,” shouted the ocelot.
“I’ll take Strawberry,” chirped the canary.
“Rocky Road,” croaked the toad
“Lemon and Lime,” growled the lion.
Said the ice cream man, “Til I see a dime,
You’ll get no ice cream of mine.”
Then the animals snarled and screeched and growled
And whinnied and whimpered and hooted and howled
And gobbled up the whole ice cream stand,
All fifty-two flavors
(fifty-three with the ice cream man).

  songs and finger plays

Five Little Ice Cream Cones (5 Little Ducks)

Five little ice cream cones standing in a row,
Each has a scoop and an ice cream cone,
Out came the sun and it shown all day,
One little ice cream cone melted away...
and so on with 4-3-2-1 (Sarah Bear)

Take Me Out For Ice Cream (Take Me…Ballgame)

Take me out for some ice cream,
Take me out to the store.
Buy me a triple scoop jumbo cone.
I won't share, I'll eat it alone!
For its scoop, scoop ,scoop up the ice cream--
Give me three kinds I adore!
For it's one, two, three, scoops to go
At the ice cream store!

Ice Cream (Twinkle Twinkle) [original by Little Stars Learning]

Ice cream, ice cream it’s too cold
It’s too cold for me to hold
So I put it in a cup
Then I eat it all up
Ice cream Ice cream it’s so good
I’d eat it always if I could.

Scream for Ice Cream

Scream off by teams.
I scream you scream
We all scream for ice cream.

On Top of My Sundae (On Top of Spaghetti)

On top of my sundae
All covered with sauce
I lost my poor cherry
It really got lost.

It rolled off the table
And onto the floor
And then my poor cherry
It rolled out the door.

It rolled to the garden
And under a bush
And then my poor cherry
It turned into mush.

If you like your sundae
All covered with sauce
Hold onto your cherry
Or it will be lost.

Making Ice Cream (Farmer in the Dell)
[original by Little Stars Learning]

Everyone does appropriate actions as they sing.

First we milk the cows, first we milk the cows
First thing to make ice cream, we have to milk the cows.

We seperate the cream, we separate the cream
Second thing to make ice cream, we seperate the cream.

We put it all in, we put it all in
Cream and milk and flavoring we put it all in.

We have to churn it up, we have to churn it up
We have to make it cold and churn it all up.

Now we have ice cream, now we have ice cream
Now we can eat it down because we have ice cream. (LS)

How Do You Eat an Ice Cream Cone?

Everyone does appropriate actions as you read this poem.
Some folks taste it daintily,
Others gulp it down quick-ily.
Some lick around and around,
So it never, ever comes dripping down.
Some shove the ice cream
Down with their tongue,
So at the bottom of the cone,
You're left with some.
But some lick in just one place
So it gets sort of sloppy,
And the top plops off
In a great big bloppy!

Eat Quickly!

My ice cream cone is good to eat. (lick slowly)
But I must lick it quickly (lick fast!)
Or it will melt from the heat. (melt to the floor)
And become quite sticky! (act like stuck to the floor)

  crafts

Cone Rubbings - Brown crayons used over large plastic needlepoint canvas makes great cone rubbings on tan paper. Ice cream cone pattern (above) can then be used to create a paper craft cone.

Popsicle Painting - Provide a variety of colors of Popsicle and white paper and let them go at it.
Skills: Unusual media, color mixing, states of matter, fine motor

  Food crafts

Baggie Ice Cream - Put:1/2 cup whole milk, 1T sugar, and 1 t vanilla into a sandwich bag. Seal this bag and then put it into a larger zip-log bag. Put rock salt and ice into the large bag. Let your children make ice cream by shaking and rolling the bag (It usually take between 5 and 10 minutes to make the ice cream.)

  games

Ice Cream Relay - Relays are great for building coordination and working crossing-the-mid-line brain connections. Using the large pom poms from the sensory table, have children scoop or tong them into a sundae cup or play cone and transport to the other side.

  activities

Hippy Hop to the ice cream shop to buy an ice cream soda. Which flavor would you like (Child's Name)?"

The child tells the flavor he wants and then the group repeats and claps his choice in syllables. i.e. straw-ber-ry is three claps. The group sings the song again for each child's turn. Skill: syllable count

How Cold Is It? Using a digital thermometer, take the temperature of the ice cream in the water table several times through the session and record the time (1/2 hour or hour only) and temperature. Before starting, have children feel the air around the ice cream to see that it is colder. (Teaches: 2 digit numbers, greater/less than, time, graphing, prediction, procedure)

Where did the cold go? Before starting the sculpture activity, have children feel the air around the ice cream to see that it is colder. Afterward, discuss How Cold Is It? And move into the science of heat transference at a preschool level.
