We talk about how the vowels hold the word together, and without vowels, we can't make more than a couple words in English. In teaching this concept, and pre-prepping the concept, I use the phrase, "Blue is the glue," to indicate that the blue letters are the vowels. As with odd and even number teaching [red/green], the children can often associate the color discrimination long before they actually "get" the concept. So that when they do "get" it, it is nearly an instantaneous understanding and immediate use. It is very confusing for preschoolers to have both upper case I and lower case l look the same, which they do with the sans serif school font I use, century gothic. I do change up and use the I with upper and lower lines, century schoolbook, on these cards.
